“Full detail” gets used for everything from a quick wash-and-vacuum to a two-day restoration. Here’s what a real full detail covers, so you can compare quotes and know what you’re paying for.
Exterior steps
- Wheels and tires first. Brake dust is the dirtiest thing on the car, so it’s cleaned before the paint to avoid splashing it around.
- Foam pre-wash. Thick foam loosens grit so less of it gets dragged across the paint.
- Two-bucket hand wash. One bucket for soap, one for rinsing the mitt, which keeps dirt out of the wash water.
- Decontamination. Clay bar or iron remover pulls out bonded contamination a wash can’t touch.
- Dry, then protect. A paint sealant adds gloss and makes the next wash easier.
- Glass, trim and tire dressing to finish.
Interior steps
- Remove and air-blow. Mats come out, and compressed air pushes debris out of seams and vents.
- Thorough vacuum of carpet, seats, the trunk and under the seats.
- Shampoo and extraction for carpets and cloth seats, which pulls dirt out instead of just wetting it.
- Leather cleaning and conditioning.
- Dash, console, door panels and cupholders cleaned and protected.
- Streak-free glass inside, including the top edge of the windshield most people miss.
A full detail is about the places a quick wash skips: door jambs, seat tracks, vents and wheel wells.
Full detail vs. car wash
A car wash, even a good one, is a 10-minute surface clean. A full detail takes hours and reaches the details: inside seams, under the seats, the clear coat itself. For a closer comparison, see mobile detailing vs. a car wash.
What a full detail doesn’t include
Swirl marks and light scratches are in the clear coat, not on top of it, so they need machine polishing. That’s paint correction, a separate service. Long-term protection measured in years is a ceramic coating. Both can be added to a full detail.

Common questions
How long does a full car detail take?
Most full details take about 3 to 6 hours. Larger vehicles, heavy pet hair or deep stains can push it longer.
Is a full detail worth it?
If your car hasn’t been professionally cleaned in a year or more, yes. It resets the interior and protects the paint, and regular maintenance afterward is quicker and cheaper.
Does a full detail remove scratches?
A standard full detail removes grime and adds protection but doesn’t level scratches or swirl marks. That takes machine polishing, which is paint correction.
