Look at a dark car in direct sun and you’ll often see a web of fine circular scratches around the light’s reflection. Those are swirl marks, and they’re the main reason paint looks dull even right after a wash. Paint correction is the process that removes them.
What paint correction is
Your car’s paint has a clear coat on top, a thin transparent layer that gives it gloss. Swirls, light scratches and water spots are tiny valleys in that clear coat. Paint correction uses a machine polisher and abrasive compounds to level the surface down to the bottom of those defects, so light reflects evenly again.
In other words, it doesn’t fill or hide scratches. It removes them.
What it fixes
- Swirl marks from automatic car washes and dirty towels
- Light scratches and scuffs in the clear coat
- Water spot etching
- Oxidation and dull, faded paint
- Holograms or buffer trails from poor past polishing
What it doesn’t fix
- Deep scratches through the clear coat. A quick test: if your fingernail catches, polishing alone usually won’t remove it.
- Rock chips, which need touch-up paint.
- Failing or peeling clear coat.
We’ll tell you up front if a scratch won’t come out. Paint correction is about honest expectations as much as polish.
How the process works
- Deep wash and decontamination to remove everything bonded to the paint.
- Inspection under strong light to map the defects.
- Test section to find the gentlest combination of pad and compound that works.
- Compounding and/or polishing panel by panel.
- Wipe-down and protection so the corrected paint stays that way.
How many polishing passes a car needs depends on the paint. We explain the difference in one-step vs. two-step paint correction.
Does your car need it?
Check your paint in direct sunlight or under a flashlight. If you see swirls, haze or water spots that don’t wash off, paint correction will make a dramatic difference. It’s also the essential first step before a ceramic coating. See why correction comes before coating.

Common questions
Does paint correction remove all scratches?
It removes swirl marks, light scratches, water spots and oxidation that sit in the clear coat. Scratches that go through the clear coat to the color or primer, usually ones you can catch with a fingernail, need touch-up or paint work.
Is paint correction safe for my clear coat?
When done properly, yes. A skilled detailer removes only the minimum clear coat needed and measures or inspects as they go. That’s why it isn’t something to rush.
How long does paint correction last?
The correction itself is permanent, but new swirls come back from improper washing. Protecting the paint with a sealant or ceramic coating and washing carefully keeps it looking corrected.
