Dry, clean carpet is the cure for mildew smell

A musty, damp-basement smell in your car almost always means moisture is trapped somewhere. North Carolina humidity makes it common, especially after summer storms or a spilled drink that soaked into the carpet. The fix is finding and drying the source, not covering it up.

Common causes

CauseWhere to check
Wet carpet or paddingPress on the carpet under the mats, especially in the rear footwells
AC evaporator moistureSmell is strongest when the AC first turns on
Clogged sunroof drainsDamp headliner edges or wet front footwells after rain
Leaking door or window sealsWater marks on door panels or wet carpet near a door
Wet items left insideGym bags, towels, umbrellas and kids’ sports gear
Old cabin air filterMusty air from the vents

How to get rid of the smell

  1. Find the moisture. Pull up the mats and press on the carpet. If it’s damp underneath, that’s your source.
  2. Fix any leak first. Sunroof drains, seals and AC drains are often simple fixes for a mechanic. Cleaning won’t last if water keeps coming in.
  3. Dry it completely. Windows down on a dry, sunny day, or a fan and dehumidifier. Wet padding under carpet can take days to dry.
  4. Clean the fabric. Extraction removes the mildew and bacteria that cause the smell.
  5. Replace the cabin air filter and dry out the AC by running the fan with the AC off before parking.

If the carpet stays damp after a rain, there’s a leak. Get it checked before cleaning so the smell doesn’t come back.

Prevent it from coming back

  • Use rubber floor mats during rainy months.
  • Don’t leave wet towels or gear in the car.
  • Shut off the AC a few minutes before you arrive and run just the fan.
  • Keep sunroof drains clear of leaves and pollen.

A professional interior detail with hot-water extraction removes the mildew from carpet and seats. For tobacco odor, see how to get smoke smell out of a car.

Common questions

Why does my car smell musty when I turn on the AC?

Moisture collects on the AC evaporator behind the dash, and mold or bacteria can grow there. Running the fan for a few minutes with the AC off before you park helps dry it out. A persistent smell may need an evaporator cleaning from a mechanic.

Can a musty smell in a car be harmful?

Mold and mildew can irritate allergies and breathing, especially for sensitive people. It’s worth finding and fixing the moisture source quickly.

Why are my car floors wet?

Common causes are a clogged sunroof drain, a leaking door or window seal, a blocked AC drain or a leaking heater core. A detailer can dry and clean the carpet, but the leak itself should be checked by a mechanic or body shop.
