High-value paint deserves the right protection

Ceramic coating and paint protection film (PPF) both protect paint, but they solve different problems. One is a thin chemical layer that makes paint slick and easy to clean. The other is a thick, clear film that physically absorbs impacts.

When ceramic coating is the better fit

  • You want easier washing and lasting gloss.
  • You mostly drive around town rather than long highway commutes.
  • You want protection from sun, pollen and bird droppings at a lower cost.

When PPF makes sense

  • You drive a lot of highway miles where rock chips are common.
  • The vehicle is new, high-value or has expensive paint.
  • You want the front end protected from chips: bumper, hood, mirrors.

Many owners combine them: PPF on the high-impact front areas and a ceramic coating over the rest of the car, often over the film too.

Prep matters for both

Both lock in the paint underneath, so swirls and scratches should be corrected first. See why paint correction comes before protection.

Common questions

Can you put ceramic coating on top of PPF?

Yes. Many owners coat their paint protection film to make it easier to clean and add gloss. It’s a common combination on high-end vehicles.

Which is better for rock chips, PPF or ceramic coating?

PPF. It’s a thick physical film that absorbs impacts. A ceramic coating is far thinner and won’t stop rock chips.

Is PPF worth it for a daily driver?

Partial PPF on the front bumper, hood and mirrors is popular for highway commuters. Full-body film is usually reserved for high-value or new vehicles because of the cost.
