If you’ve priced ceramic coatings, you’ve probably noticed most quotes include paint correction. That’s not an upsell. It’s the most important step in the whole process.
A coating locks in what’s underneath
A ceramic coating is clear and bonds to the paint surface. Whatever is on that surface when it goes on, whether swirls, scratches or water spots, gets sealed under a glossy layer for years. Gloss actually makes defects more noticeable, not less.
Coat swirled paint and you end up with shiny swirled paint that’s harder to fix later, because the coating has to be polished off first.
What correction does for the coating
- Removes defects so the coating seals in a flawless finish.
- Creates a clean surface that helps the coating bond properly.
- Maximizes gloss. The coating amplifies whatever finish is underneath.
Think of it like refinishing a wood table. You sand and smooth it before you seal it, not after.
How much correction is enough?
Not every car needs heavy correction before a coating. A newer car may need only a light one-step polish. Neglected or dark paint usually benefits from two steps. We explain the difference in one-step vs. two-step paint correction.
The typical order of work
- Wash and full decontamination
- Inspection and test section
- Paint correction
- Panel wipe to remove polishing oils
- Ceramic coating application
- Cure time before the first wash

Common questions
Can you ceramic coat a car without paint correction?
You can, but the coating will lock in every swirl and scratch underneath and make them more visible under the added gloss. At minimum, most paint should get a light polish first.
Does a brand-new car need paint correction before coating?
Often only a light polish. New cars can pick up wash marks at the dealership or in transport, so an inspection under strong light comes first.
How long after paint correction can you apply ceramic coating?
The same day. The paint is wiped down to remove polishing oils, then the coating goes on so nothing contaminates the fresh surface.
