Paint correction is one of the bigger investments in detailing, and quotes vary widely. Here’s what typically drives the price and what to expect for each level of correction.

Typical prices by level

National ranges from industry pricing guides. Your quote depends on your vehicle and its paint.

LevelTypical U.S. rangeTypical timeBest for
One-step$300 – $6004 – 8 hoursLight swirls, boosting gloss
Two-step$600 – $1,2008 – 16 hoursModerate swirls and scratches
Multi-step / full$1,200 – $2,200+20+ hoursHeavy defects, show-car finish

What affects the cost

  • Paint condition. More defects mean more passes and more time.
  • Vehicle size. Trucks and large SUVs have far more surface area.
  • Paint hardness. Some factory paints are hard and slow to correct. Others are soft and need extra care.
  • Your goal. A big improvement on a daily driver costs less than chasing perfection.
  • Protection afterward. Adding a ceramic coating raises the total but protects the result.

A good detailer starts with a test section and tells you what level of correction actually makes sense, rather than selling you the biggest package.

Combining correction and coating

Correction and coating are often done together because the coating protects the freshly corrected paint. See why correction comes before coating and what a ceramic coating costs.

Common questions

Why does paint correction cost so much?

It’s skilled labor. A one-step correction takes several hours, and a multi-step correction can take a full day or more of careful machine work.

Is a one-step correction enough?

For light swirls, often yes. It typically removes most light defects and adds a big jump in gloss at a lower price. Heavier defects need a two-step or more.

Is paint correction cheaper than repainting?

Much cheaper. A full repaint can cost several thousand dollars, while correction restores the existing finish for a fraction of that, as long as the clear coat is intact.
