There’s no single number that fits every car, but there is a schedule that fits Waxhaw. Our weather, our pine trees and our roads put specific kinds of wear on a vehicle at specific times of year. Here’s how we’d plan it.
The short answer
- Full detail: 2 to 3 times a year.
- Maintenance wash and vacuum: every 2 to 6 weeks.
- Paint protection: sealant every few months, or a ceramic coating that lasts years.
Spring: pollen season
From late March into April, everything in Union County turns yellow. Pine pollen is slightly acidic when it gets wet, and a morning of dew plus afternoon sun can bake it onto paint. It also gets pulled into your cabin air filter and settles into vents and carpet. Plan a full detail once the worst of the pollen drops, and rinse the car weekly while it’s falling.
Summer: heat, bugs and sap
Bug splatter and tree sap do the most damage when they sit in July heat. If you park under the pines at Cane Creek Park or in a shaded Millbridge driveway, check your roof and hood often. A maintenance detail every few weeks keeps these from etching in. Interiors take a beating too, with sunscreen, sweaty sports gear and drink spills.
Fall: prep for winter
Fall is the best time to protect your paint before winter. A clay bar and fresh sealant, or a ceramic coating, gives brine and grime nothing to grab onto. It’s also a good time to deep clean the interior before the holidays and family road trips.
Winter: road brine
NCDOT pre-treats roads with brine when ice is in the forecast. That salt solution sticks to lower panels, wheel wells and the undercarriage. Wash it off within a few days of a treatment, even if it’s cold out.

Signs you’re overdue
- The paint feels rough after washing.
- Water sits flat on the paint instead of beading.
- The cabin has a smell that air freshener only covers up.
- Carpet stains have set in and won’t lift with a household cleaner.
